Boron Steel

Boron Steels: Properties and Applications

Boron steels are high-quality, heat-treatable construction steels that are often used in carburization and cold-forming processes, including applications such as screw manufacturing. The key benefit of adding boron to steel is the enhancement of hardenability, even in very small concentrations, starting at just 0.0010% boron.

Effect of Boron on Steel

Boron is added to unalloyed and low-alloy steels to improve hardness through increased hardenability. Even in trace amounts (as low as 100 ppm), boron provides the same hardenability enhancement as other more expensive alloying elements that would need to be used in much larger quantities. This makes boron a cost-effective solution for improving steel properties without the need for larger amounts of more expensive elements.

Key Features of Boron Steels
  • Hardenability Enhancement: The addition of even minute quantities of boron significantly improves the hardenability of steel, making it easier to achieve desired hardness levels during heat treatment.
  • Wear Resistance and Strength: Boron steels are known for their wear resistance and high strength, making them ideal for use in harsh, high-stress applications.
Applications of Boron Steels
  • Boron steels are used in a wide range of applications, particularly where enhanced hardness and strength are needed:

    • High-strength structural steel: For use in demanding applications where toughness and wear resistance are critical.
    • Wear materials: For components subjected to heavy wear, such as punching tools, knives, saw blades, and spades.
    • Vehicle safety: Boron steels are also used in vehicle safety components, including safety beams and other high-strength structural elements.
  • Wear Resistance and Strength: Boron steels are known for their wear resistance and high strength, making them ideal for use in harsh, high-stress applications.
Carbon-Manganese-Boron Steels (C-Mn-B):

C-Mn-B steels are often specified as cost-effective replacements for more expensive alloy steels. They offer equivalent hardenability but at a much lower cost, making them suitable for various industrial applications, including:

  • Earth scraper segments
  • Track links
  • Rollers
  • Drive sprockets
  • Axle components
  • Crankshafts

These steels provide an excellent balance of mechanical properties, including toughness and wear resistance, while remaining more affordable than traditional alloy steels.

Boron Alloy Steels

Boron alloy steels are specified when the base composition of the steel meets the required mechanical properties (such as toughness and wear resistance) but lacks sufficient hardenability for the intended application. Instead of opting for a more highly alloyed (and expensive) steel, users can specify a boron- grade steel to achieve the necessary hardenability for larger section sizes or more demanding applications.
