Non Ferrous Metals

Non-Ferrous Metals: Characteristics and Benefits

Non-ferrous metals are widely used in various manufacturing applications, such as airplane fuselages, automotive engines, fasteners, wiring kits, building roofs, and pipes. Unlike ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals contain little or no iron, which gives them several distinct advantages.

Rustproof Properties:

One of the key benefits of non-ferrous metals is that they are rustproof. While they can still corrode, they do not rust. Rusting occurs when iron is exposed to oxygen, resulting in the formation of rust oxide, or rust. Since non-ferrous metals contain little or no iron, they are not susceptible to rusting. This makes them an ideal choice for environments with high humidity, where moisture vapor typically causes ferrous metals to rust.

Higher Conductivity:

Non-ferrous metals are typically more conductive than their ferrous counterparts. For example, copper, a well-known non-ferrous metal, has the highest electrical conductivity of any metal. Electrical conductivity refers to how easily electricity can flow through a material. This makes non-ferrous metals, especially copper, ideal for use in electrical wiring and other electrical applications.

Lightweight:

In addition to better conductivity, non-ferrous metals are generally lighter than ferrous metals. Since ferrous metals contain iron, which is relatively heavy, they tend to be heavier than non-ferrous metals. Non-ferrous metals, like aluminum, are much lighter than iron, steel, and other ferrous metals, making them a preferred option in applications where weight is a critical factor.
